If you want to find out about why you do, say or feel a certain way - pay attention to your parents.
If you want to know why your parents, do, say and feel a certain way - pay attention to their parents.
You will start to see patterns, some good and some not so good. Some of us are products of our environment. Maybe that environment was good, maybe bad, maybe terrible. Maybe an environment with emotional neglect from our parents.
People don't talk about it. People just learn to endure it not knowing all that it kills in you.
Some of us in our 30's, 50"s even 70's plus are still feeling the effects of emotional neglect in our lives. Some still mad at parents and family members who didn't give what we expected.
But I am going to give you a different perspective - your parents and family members were people too. Maybe they didn't have the role model they needed. Maybe they were emotionally neglected too. Maybe they couldn't give everything you wanted, but they tried as best as they could with what they had.
Now that may not be the answer you expected, but maybe that is the answer.
Not long ago, I unexpectedly received an answer to a question that I wanted to know for as long as I can remember. As I listened, I realized there was no flaw, but there was a cycle of brokenness, passed from generation to generation that needed compassion, forgiveness and the healing that only God can give.
Remember we, including the people we love the most are people like us - people who were once children that may have never gotten over their past and are simply in need of forgiveness, healing and love.
So, open your mind, open your heart and forgive your past, your parents and begin the healing process that will break the brokenness that has passed from generation.
